Homemade Organic Apple Cider Vinegar

Over the centuries, many people have used Apple Cider Vinegar for many different purposes such as: making pickles, dressing salad or folk remedies. Today, it becomes more popular that ACV has some significant benefits for taking care of our beauty like losing weight, brightening up the skin, caring hair, etc.

Making DIY ACV is always such an easy and inexpensive way. It just takes a short amount of your time by 100% natural and safe way. There are many methods to make Apple Cider Vinegar, including making ACV from scraps or whole apple. According to this article, we will show you the way how to make it from scraps.

This method uses apple scraps like the peels and cores. This is a perfect convenient method, the reason is that you can both eat the apple and make ACV as well. This way is recommended because it’s faster and effective than using the whole apple.

Apple Scraps Vinegar
Let’s get it started!

Ingredients.

A wide – mouth jar

Apple scraps (the peels and cores from apple)

A piece of cheesecloth for covering jar.

Directions.

Step 1.

Leave the scraps to air until they turn brown as you want.

Step 2.
Put the apple scraps into the jar and top it up with water. You can continue add scraps for a few days later if you want, but don’t put it on top of the jar.

Step 3.
Cover with the cheesecloth and put it in the dark place.

Pour the vinegar through a strainer to filter out the scraps. If it doesn’t turn out strong enough you can add more sweetener and ferment for another couple of weeks.

You’ll notice the scraps in the jar starts to thicken after a few days and grayish scum forms on top. When this happens, stop adding scraps and leave it for a month for fermenting.
After a month later, you can taste and start testing it. If it suitable with you, strain out the apple scraps and bottle the vinegar. It is ok if your vinegar is cloudy. There will be some sediments from the apple. If you don’t like the cloudiness, straining it through a paper coffee filter which will remove most of the sediments.

What is your favorite way to use apple cider vinegar?

MAKE YOUR OWN “DESIGNER” INSULATED TUMBLERS & MUGS

MAKE YOUR OWN “DESIGNER” INSULATED TUMBLERS & MUGS

A few weeks ago I was doing some web surfing looking for DIY gift ideas and stumbled upon these adorable Kate Spade tumblers. My first thought was that it was odd that there was even such a thing as a “designer” water cup! My second thought was HOW CUTE ARE THOSE!? And my third thought was…I could totally make a DIY version of those. So I did! :-)
Tracking down the cups was pretty easy. I found both the tumblers with straws and the mugs that could be customized on Amazon.com. The TRICKY part came when I wanted to get “creative” with the inserts that go inside the cups to make them “designer.” Well, I’m no designer…but I was inspired by the colors and simple designs of the Kate Spade tumblers so I went in that direction.

Little did I know that I was in WAY over my head in the graphics design department! It actually wouldn’t have been nearly as hard if I’d been happy with picking some sort of random pattern, but I had my heart set on stripes & polka dots, and making those match up around a tapered glass is MUCH harder than it sounds.
So after hours of trying, I finally managed to come up with an insert that worked for both glasses and then I went a little crazy making different colors and patterns.

Basically I’ve done the hard work for you! All YOU have to do, if you want to make your OWN “designer” tumblers, is download the PDF files, print them, and cut them out.

Then you simply unscrew the bottom of the cup, roll the paper into a cone shape, and insert it. I printed mine out on cardstock because it was a little sturdier and held its’ shape better once it was put inside the cup.

As you can tell from this photo above, all my blood, sweat, and tears paid off on this project because while not PERFECT, those stripes in the back match up pretty darn good (if I do say so myself!)

Oh, and you’ll also need to order some cups. Here are links to the two tumblers I bought online at Amazon…but I’m sure there are other sources out there.

Unfortunately I can’t guarantee these inserts that I worked so hard on will fit in other cups.  So just keep that in mind when ordering.

Here are the several different templates I made up. Hopefully there is one that will suit you. Click on the numbers BELOW THIS IMAGE to download the color and pattern you are interested in.

Like I said above, I am an amateur graphics designer at BEST, but hopefully these will end up working for you as well as they did for me.
Best thing about this project?  Six gifts crossed off the ol’ Christmas shopping list! :-)

HOW TO MAKE PRETTY PAPER FLOWERS

HOW TO MAKE PRETTY PAPER FLOWERS

If I went back and counted how many craft posts I have done since the beginning of this blog I’m afraid the number would be rather dismal. But out of the relatively few crafts I HAVE done…I’d venture to say the majority would involve some sort of PAPER. I’ve never met a paper craft I didn’t like, and I must be rubbing off on Britta because today’s post was all her doing! I can’t believe how CUTE these flowers turned out! I’m actually a little jealous that *I* didn’t make them! ;-)  Not really, now that Britta has perfected the process I plan on making many more! I’m envisioning a beautiful garland! Can’t you just see it???
Britta writes:
I’m not a terribly crafty person, so when I took on the task of creating flowers out of paper for today’s post, I was nervous. I was sure that I was going to mess it up, and that I wouldn’t end up with anything even remotely resembling a flower. Fortunately, however, the process ended up being really easy, and the finished product looked lovely! If I can make these paper flowers, I promise that you can too!
The supplies you’ll need to make these paper flowers are double-sided scrapbook paper, some scissors, and a hot glue gun.
A few notes:
  • If you already have some single-sided scrapbook paper, feel free to use that, but I really like the effect of having color on both sides of the petal.
  • If you don’t have a hot glue gun, you can use any type of glue you have. I would just recommend using a fast-drying glue, otherwise you’ll be holding your petals in place all day waiting for the glue to dry. Ain’t nobody got time for that.

Paper Flowers
First, take your double-sided scrapbook paper and cut it into several 2″ by 2″ pieces. I did try this process using 3″ by 3″ squares, but you end up needing to use a LOT of them in order to achieve a “full” looking flower, so I would stick with 2″ by 2″ for your first attempt. :-)

cutting-petals
Take a few of the squares at a time and fold them in half. Cut the papers into a petal shape along the open edge (not the folded edge!)

Paper Flowers
I chose to crumple and unfold each of my “petals” to give them more texture and character, but this step is optional.

Paper Flowers
Roll your first petal fairly tightly, to about the diameter of a pencil. Put a bit of hot glue on the corner to secure it to itself.

Paper Flowers
Add your next petal by rolling it around the first one, leaving some space in between. I found the easiest way to do this was to glue one end down first, then wrap it around and figure out where you want to place the other end. Once you like how it looks, then glue the second end down.

Paper Flowers
Continue to place and glue more petals. Try to stagger your placement of the petals so that they aren’t all facing each other. Keep adding petals until you reach your desired “fullness,” then you’re done!
How easy is that? Seriously, the hardest part about making these paper flowers is avoiding hot glue burns (which we all know is an impossible task anyway.)

Paper Flowers
These paper flowers would look great as part of a spring-themed centerpiece for your table, or even strung together in a garland!

How would you use these cute paper flowers??
